Madhoshi is Bollywood's 9/11 reference and its weird

The American 9/11 terrorist attacks shook the world. Thousands of people around the world were affected by it, some physically and some mentally. Surprisingly, even thouugh the Indian and the US audiences were so much in sync, there have been only a few films about the 9/11 attacks, one being Madhoshi – possibly the only supernatural film with a 9/11 reference.

Anupama is a young woman who lives with her parents in Mumbai, while her sister and brother-in-law are in the states. On the eve of her parent’s 25th wedding anniversary, while she is on the phone with her sister, the attacks of 9/11 happen. She loses her sister and brother-in-law in the attacks.

After a couple of years, she meets an advertising professional, Arpit, and falls in love with him. Even as she is engaged to him, she meets a mysterious man, Aman, who claims to be working for a top secret organisation. She falls in love with him. What could be a tepid love triangle turns into a psychological mystery, when we find out that Aman is a figment of Anupama’s imagination.

Even as her family tries to tell her the truth, Anupama begins losing her mind. She is admitted to the hospital, but even here, she hallucinates that Arpit has come to meet her. Some of these scenes are quite good from the supernatural films point of V.

Madhoshi is an intelligently made film and has its moments. The film doesn’t keep any loop holes and unanswered questions. Performances are par for the course. However, what Madhoshi fails to do is take advantage of the 9/11 plot in its storyline. Basically, apart from the first scene, the 9/11 attacks have nothing to do with the entire film. There are two major twists in this Bollywood psychological thriller – but they are essential to the wrapping up of the story. You can watch the film on YouTube:
