The Shape of Water could be the creature film we are all waiting for

Creature films are a hit or miss. Even the legendary Godzilla wasn’t taken to nicely by fans. While Hellboy will soon become mainstream with the movie coming up, I am still rooting for the obscure creature film that pushes envelopes and doesn’t deal with cliches.

Well, looks like Fox Searchlight’s Shape of Water could just be that film. Shape of Water looks pretty fresh. A creature created/found due to some 70s Government work, a audio-impaired female employee developing a relationship with the said creature and some great direction by Guillermo Del Toro.

Shape of Water has captured the audience’s interest. Some are asking whether this is the prequel to the Abraham Sapien. Though there are some immense similarities, there’s nothing to actually connect the two projects. Secondly, Hellboy is bankrolled by Legendrary Pictures and Shape of Water is a Fox Searchlight baby.

Another interesting goop going on is there there could be a sex scene between the creature and the human, Emily, who develops a connect with the character. This is again, rumour. However, the IMdb page does rate this film with an R, which means that the film has sexual content, graphic nudity, violence and language. But again, there’s still no word on who the sexual content is filmed on.

The Shape of Water has one of the most striking cast list for a horror/fantasy film in recent times. With Fox Searchlight behind, we could well be looking at the beginnings of a whole new franchise that’s Be that as it may, the very idea that another well made creature film is coming my way is keeping me awake at nights – and that’s in a good way.

Sally Hawkins is a feature and short film veteran. She’s a twice Golden Globe nominated actress. She is most well known for her films like Happy Go Lucky and Blue Jasmine. She is also part of the upcoming Godzilla: King of Monsters. She was also Dr. Vivienne Graham in the Godzilla film. And then there’s Octavia Spencer, one of the most charistmatic actresses with an amazing screen presence – not to mention acting chops that places her right up there with the best.

With so much in place, I am completely woke for this Hollywood fantasy/horror film. The film releases December 8.

Here’s the starcast of the film:

  • Sally Hawkins as Elisa Esposito
  • Michael Shannon as Colonel Richard Strickland, Elisa’s superior
  • Octavia Spencer as Zelda Fuller, Elisa’s friend and one of her co-workers
  • Richard Jenkins as Giles, Elisa’s neighbor
  • Doug Jones as The Asset
  • Michael Stuhlbarg as Dr. Robert Hoffstetler
  • Lauren Lee Smith as Elaine Strickland
  • Nick Searcy as General Hoyt
  • David Hewlett as Fleming
