If you thought you’d never see Karan Johar’s name on Saamri.Com, you were in august company. Saamri.Com celebrates pulp and cult films, films that are a little hatke from the love-shove, what he is known for. But Karan has been doing films which celebrate pulp and cult since a while now.
His villain take in Bombay Velvet was an ode to the villains fo the seventies – and Saamri.Com is nothing if not an ode to that era of cinema. But now, he goes the full haul with Welcome to New York, a crackling, fresh comedy that stars Diljith Dosanjh, Sonakshi Sinha, Ritesh Deshmukh (my favorite), Boman Irani and Lara Dutta. Made under the Puja Films banner, the Welcome to New York trailer just hit YouTube. There’s even Rana Dagubatti, and looks like some of the shooting is done with the blessings of IIFA (Ritesh and Karan play hosts of an event).
It’s refreshing to see that a film with such a star cast has a low-key release and none of them are hocking it with the PR juggernaut that proclaims that it is going to change the history of cinema. Kudos to Karan Johar for agreeing to bring back the 70s and 80s trope of ‘judwaa bhai’, (twins), one a goody host and another a gangster who offs people because they watched a particular film. The film releases 23rd Feb. Watch this hilarious trailer here:
